CHEP '95 Opening Remarks from
the Deputy Spokesman for the D0 Experiment at Fermilab

Eugene H. Fisk

My name is Gene Fisk and I am the Deputy Spokesman for the D0 colliding beam experiment at Fermilab. We and physicists from CBPF and other institutions are collaborators that number about 450. In total there are 15 scientists from Brazil who work with us. One of our senior Brazilian collaborators, Dr. Arthur Maciel, colleague of Alberto Santoro, will say a few words later about Brazil's involvement at Fermilab.

This video link is an important tool in shrinking the 10 thousand km distance from Rio to Chicago. It allows the multi-dimensional aspects of a large international scientific collaboration to be carried out effectively - in the best traditions of science, where a scientist makes individual contributions that are subject to critical review almost instantly. Since the language of science is both mathematical and symbolic the video link allows ideas, pictures, concepts, drawings - i.e. words and graphics - to be easily communicated. We work, today, at a distance interactively.

We at Fermilab want the CHEP conference to know the excellent contributions of Brazilian scientists in both computing and physics at Fermilab. For 14 years, since 1981, the Brazilians have been part of science at Fermilab. This week you will hear about the Fermilab program and Brazil's involvement in it. CBPF has developed technical applications of computing hardware and software with the Advanced Computing Project, the charm quark physics experiment and the D0 colliding beam experiment. The most exciting and important achievement for Brazil, however, is their participation as scientists. Your countrymen have proposed ideas for carrying out experiments and they have implemented the techniques necessary to reach important conclusions. We and they are indistinguishable in this business. This is a happy state of affairs that is only possible with broad support from the Brazilian government, the Brazilian scientific establishment, the universities and their colleagues. They have earned your support by doing interesting and important science. We want to thank you and them and wish the CHEP conference success in the week ahead.
