Biography for Dr. Stewart C. Loken

Dr. Loken is Director of the Information and Computing Sciences Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He received his Ph. D. in High Energy Physics in 1971 from the California Institute of Technology. After three years at the Laboratory of Nuclear Studies at Cornell University, he joined the Physics Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. He became a Senior Physicist at LBL in 1981. In 1988 he was appointed as Division Director.

In his present position, Dr. Loken is responsible for the leadership and management of a 250-person division that provides computing, communication and information systems at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The division manages both the scientific and administrative computing at LBL and provides on-site networking and all external connectivity. The division also operates all data and voice communication and video conferencing. The division provides all information services to the laboratory including traditional and electronic publishing services and all on-site libraries. The division has a very active computer science research program with a focus on network protocols and applications, distributed computing applications, and scientific data management. The program also provides application development support to large high energy and nuclear physics experiment and to the national human genome program.
