Abstract
With the availability of cheap powerful computers multivariate methods of
analysis that hitherto were impractical are now feasible. We describe a search
technique, we have dubbed the "random grid search", that can be used to find
optimal cuts. The technique is an efficient variant of the well-known grid
search. We illustrate the use of the technique by applying it to the task of
finding optimal cuts to extract hadronic top quark events from the background.
The results of this method compare favorably with those from a feed-forward
neural network.
